Welding

Instructor:  Mr. Maguire

The welding program here at Harford Technical High School is a three year program designed to train students so they can become productive citizens in the world of work. In order to accomplish this task, it is imperative that the students are given the opportunity to be exposed to the related courses in construction and fabrication during their sophomore year.

During the sophomore, Junior and Senior year the students receive training in oxyacetylene welding and cutting, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, safety, all position welding, blueprint reading, joint design and fabrication. Once the student has mastered a welding skill weather it's oxyacetylene welding or arc welding and their weldment meets the standards outlined in the welding text, the student is introduced to live jobs where they can put their knowledge and welding skills to use, thus giving them the satisfaction of seeing the end product put into service. Upon completion of the three year program the students are given the opportunity, at their expense, to take the (A.W.S) AMERICAN WELDING SOCIETY certification test. The certification gives the student advantage for employment over non-technical students thus allowing them to achieve a good income within a few years of graduation as well as preparing them for higher education if they so desire.

Students can continue their education attending apprenticeship programs, post secondary schools, Hobart School of Welding Technology, Lincoln Welding School, Divers Academy and any College of Technology just to name a few.

During the senior year I invite employers in to observe the students putting their welding skills to use. Not only has this opened the door to employment for our students, it also opened the door to a partnership with the business within the community.

Students who have been successful in the welding program set goals for themselves and posess the three (3) D's, the Desire, Determination and Dedication.
