On December 15, 2008, two of Harford Technical High School's teachers, George Carr and Connie Withrow,  were invited to speak at a MSDE professional development session. Mr. Carr and Ms. Withrow are the cosmetology instructors for Harford County Public Schools. In reviewing the 2007-2008 school year testing data, Ms. Nina Roa, MSDE CTE Instructional Specialist, "found that Harford County had one of the highest access rates (all students who were eligible to take the theory exam did so) at 100%.  Ms. Roa believes that it would be beneficial for cosmetology instructors from across the state to learn from the Harford County teachers the activities and strategies used to achieve such high results.  " Congratulations George and Connie!!!

         Cosmetology at HTHS

The Cosmetology Department at Harford Technical High School is a three-year program beginning in grade ten. Students can earn a minimum of four credits before they graduate. In the senior year, students may participatein the Cooperative Work Experience Program.

This instructional program prepares the students to apply their knowledge and skills in all phases of Cosmetology. Everything from finger-waving to hair-color application is taught to the students in the practical portion of the program. In the theoretical part of the program, students are taught the fundamentals of hair, its properties, skin care, chemical services, nail care, sterilization and decontamination. Most importantly, the students are taught a well-rounded People Skills Program as communication with other individuals is of the utmost importance.

Upon completion of the program, students who have accumulated 1500 actual hours in the course and have successfully passed both their practical and theoretical work with a 75% average or better are then eligible to take the State Board Exam in Baltimore.

Upon passing the State Board Exam, students have a variety of avenues they can pursue with their State Board License. Different venues they can pursue such as a hairstylist, colorist, make-up technician, nail technician, demonstrator for a major manufacturer, and educator.

Opening a salon would require an individual to pursue further education in the business field to better prepare them for a successful business career. Both credit and non-credit courses are offered toward this end.

The Cosmetology Career is a rewarding experience monetarily as well as psychologically. Making someone look good as well as making them feel good is no easy task. It takes someone with a flair for the arts and an open mind to humanity.

The Cosmetology Field has become a demanding career for an individual who enjoys hard work, great pay, and personal satisfaction knowing they can make someone look and feel good about themselves.

If you are a people person, enjoy meeting new people, and are artistic have an open imagination, then this is the field for you! An outgoing personality is a plus in this field as well.
